Subject: Other approaches to the URN question...

When Larry Masinter and I were at SIGIR at Pittsburgh in July, he suggested
that the CORBA people (doing object oriented operating system desing for networks) might have some fresh light to shed on this question. I spoke with
the CORBA presenters at Interop and must regretfully report that they haven't even touched the issues of network-wide naming of their objects. The most they
were willing to say is that they might investigate X.500 (!) for that
functionality in the future (18 months was their minimum timeframe for
addressing this issue.) So, unless other folks know of *tangible* work being
done in this area, we can assume that it falls to us to get it right.
I know that the library community is looking to us for a lot of guidance in
this area, it would be good also to wrap this up fairly quickly.
