I can imagine doing without everything else that's been categorized as
meta-information except for the type information. The type of a data
object seems necessary to do even the most minimal interpretation.

I hear that people want to make a 'location' pure by leaving out the
type information, (and then change WWW to 'start passing
metainformation around along with the URL) but then, what applications
*would* use URLs all by themselves?
