Why not? I suggest that WWW clients be modified to accept the following URL types:
ftpt: (text retrieval)
ftpb: (binary retrieval)
ftpd: (directory listing)
ftp: (same as now -- client guesses)
and after most of the clients are upgraded we can start using the new types.
