Well, as a minimum we'd better have an existance proof
that the resolution can be accomplished. If we accept
this, then I believe that having a general model for
automated resolution in mind during these discussions will
help keep things focused and moving along.

I think it's more than that. I see it as the identifier
that informs the user how to interpret the otherwise
opaque string (thus, "ISBN" tells you to go to the shelves,
while "WHOIS++" tells you to go to the appropriate WHOIS++
server...)
