Subject: how to make progress on the URL document

The timeline for getting the URL document out the door at the Seattle IETF
was to have the draft done today (March 11). Looks like that's not going
to happen. I suggest that about the only way to be sure of getting this
out the door at the Seattle IETF and leaving plenty of time for the URN/URC
discussions, is to spend the next three days writing up (and circulating the
mailing list) the sections that need to change in a format that can simply be
dropped into the document... by Tuesday we should have both consensus and
sections for the document that can simply be pasted into the current document.
That's what I have been trying to do with the gopher section. This will make
Tim's job much, much easier since he can simply cut and paste when he gets back
online in a week. I think we owe Tim a pleasant surprise like this since he has
been so busy.
In fact, to make Tim's life super-easy, I'll volunteer to take the re-written
sections and put them into a modified version of Tim's January 1 draft, if the
rewritten sections are sent to the list, and if we got the rewritten sections
glued together into a revised draft there would still be time to fix any
problems that creep into the revised draft.
As I recall, the issues to be resolved in the URL document other than the
Gopher section are the ftp section, the netnews section, and the plain text
wrappers. To make it easier to glue the pieces back together, please make it
clear which section in the Jan 1 draft you are proposing to replace.
You can find the January 1 draft up for anonymous ftp on info.cern.ch in
/pub/www/doc/draft-uri-url-02.txt
So... how about writing up any propsed changes in a format that can be dropped
into the draft over the next couple days so we can produce a revised draft by
Tuesday?
