For those looking for examples of things like URNs and URLs (there are
many), I told some folks that I would send out a pointer to the System
33 report
Steve Putz. Design and Implementation of the System 33 Document
Service. Xerox PARC P93-00112, 1993.
It is available as:
http://parcweb.parc.xerox.com/hypertext/dlbx/other-papers/system33.ps
be warned that it is over 100 pages long; email me if you want a
printed copy. The main points of interest in System 33 for this group
were 256-bit document handles (think URN) and file locations
(protocol, host, path, format tuples), (think URL + format).
The report describes the design and implementation in some detail, as
well as a little history of the project.
