The main attraction of WHOIS++ seems to be its
attribute-value record oriented data model. If what you
want is to focus on the speed aspect (and in particular
minimize your connect time) then I suspect Prospero is be
something you should take a closer look at. It was
specifically designed using a connectionless model and even
runs atop a reliable datagram model (which UDP does not).
Code is available and it's been around for several years
now.
