Subject: Time to split?

Excuse me if this sounds like a provocation, it is no the intent.
Given the current state of the (non?)progress in this group,
given the conflicting requirements expressed, my question is:
Is it not time that we have roughly two broad sets
of requirements and contributers groups
. the one related with traditional publishers and librarians
. the other (much more modest) just willing to have
some form of Directory Names for Documents on the Network
Probably in the long run it may/will be possible to
have one solution meeting both sets of requirements
however (personal opinion) I don't see any chance
for a solution to set 1 being defined/designed before years.
Thus, my proposal:
we, with humility, admit this fact and decide to separate
the two issue for the time being
- we let the publishers/librarian community take their time
to define URN URC aso...
- we start a new group/study for what I would call
NRDN (Networked Resource Directory Names) and NRD (.. Descriptor)
which would limit to cover the second set of requirements
(provide a DN for resources, enable from this Name to
retrieve a resource Descriptor which will include
amongst others one or more URL). The main difference lies
in the fact that the starting point is an Internet Directory
service, and not publishers defined/owned/controled resolvers.
I am confident that given the Web/gopher/aso urgent needs, and given
the progress being made today about IWPS (Internet White Pages) it is
possible to come-up before end of '94 with an agreement, and to
start deploy NRDN NRD and the related directory service
as soon as begining of '95.
What about this proposal?
