international standard serial (or serials?) number

which performs the same function as ISBNs except for serials,
obviously. The difference, I believe, is that serials have
identifying volume and/or issue numbers and dates. ISSN
registration in America is handled by the Library of Congress.

also, the notion of legacy numbering schemes implies that they
may eventually disappear, as in legacy systems. i wonder if
the phrase "existing numbering schemes" might not have the same
connotation.
